In 972 Dubrovnik determined that the day of Saint Blaise's martyrdom, 3 February, would be the day of his festivity in Dubrovnik. Since then, Dubrovnik has more than 1000 times celebrated the Festivity of Saint Blaise. Thus, in 2016 along with the 1700th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Blaise, the 1044th consecutive Festivity of Saint Blaise was celebrated.

The earliest description of the Festivity was recorded by humanistic teacher Filippo Diversi, who was staying in Dubrovnik in the mid 15th century.
